27th of January: International Holocaust Remembrance Day

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 200,000 Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.

Holocaust survivors and various leaders make their voices heard on the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. Many of them speak publicly about the Holocaust or their experiences around the event, its aftermath and why the world should never forget what happened in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s.

The UN organizes and supports events such as: concerts by musicians who survived the Holocaust or are survivors’ descendants; art exhibitions influenced by the Holocaust; presentations of special stamps; the introduction of special educational programs; and film screening and book signing focused on the Holocaust.

5 Places to Remember Holocaust Day

1. Auschwitz (Poland)

2. Anne Frank’s House (The Netherlands)

3. Yad Vashem (Israel)

4. Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Germany)

5. Shoes on the Danube Bank (Hungary)

We, as Fundacja CAT, went to Auschwitz to remember and witness one of the darkest moments of the history.

What is your name?

My name is Anastasia Mimikou.

How long did you stay?

I had been staying in Leszno for two months.

What are you taking away from this experience?

It was a real life-changing experience. I tried things that in my place I have no chance to do so. I met beautiful people and learnt about a different culture and way of living. I made new friends from different places. Now, that I am a lot of kilometres away, I am still able to feel the warmth that this place brings to my heart because ended up to be my second home!

What would you like to do next?

I would like to keep on searching new things to experience and promote myself. Maybe, I will search for a long-term programme to do!

What is your best memory from this EVS?

There are a lot of things that I will remember forever. But if I had to choose, that would be the flash mob about human rights in high school. The place was full of positive energy, the students were involved. We were wearing special accessories, making balloons and having fun with the students.

Living in same house with some people whom I never met before, from countries that one may have never visited before, makes it all an exciting & interesting experience. I couldn’t have it any other way.DSC_7295 copy 2
